The most common emergency in the trade — and the most favourable: a slammed door (not key-locked) is held only by the latch, and opens with fine techniques in minutes, almost always without any damage. Neither your lock nor your door is replaced; you simply get back in.

Slammed vs locked: the difference that changes everything

A slammed door has not been locked with a key: only the bevelled latch holds it. A locked door has its deadbolts thrown — a different technique and a different price. It is the first question we ask on the phone; if you are unsure, just describe what happened.

How we open without damage

The standard method slips a flexible blade between leaf and frame to push the latch back — one to five minutes on most doors. Where the fit is too tight (rebated doors, insulation seals), we switch to by-pass tools or latch hooks. Result: no marks, no broken parts, your original lock intact. Special cases — engaged door chains, double latches, damaged latches — are daily routine for our teams. Skip the credit-card trick: it rarely works and usually ends with a snapped card and a scratched latch.

Once inside, consider immunising the door: a spare key with a trusted neighbour, or a thumb-turn cylinder so the door can never lock itself behind you again — we can fit one at the end of the visit, on a quote, never imposed.
