Lock repair — repair before replacing

Before selling you a new lock, a good locksmith asks whether yours can be repaired. A catching key, a lazy bolt, a misaligned strike, a seized mechanism: a large share of "lock failures" are fixed by targeted repair, at a fraction of replacement cost. At AMG, repair is a service in its own right — not a commercial failure.

What we repair most

The catching key — a clogged cylinder, tired pins or a worn key: cleaning, dry lubrication, sometimes a fresh key cut to code. The rubbing bolt — the door has moved with the seasons: strike realignment and hinge adjustment restore a crisp lock-up. The seized mechanism — springs and cams gummed by years or greasy sprays: strip, clean, relubricate. The drooping or free-spinning handle — worn spindle or follower, standard van-stock parts. The desynchronised multipoint linkage, and the tired lock case — often replaceable alone, without touching the rest.

Blow out the keyway, one spray of dry lubricant (graphite or PTFE — never oil), ten key turns to spread it, a glance at bolt and strike — and check the hinges each season: a door that starts rubbing is a lock under stress, and that is how real failures begin. Shops and condominiums: annual multi-door contracts available — the lobby lock that dies on a Friday night is an avoidable classic.

The key turns but the door won't open — repairable? Often: typically a cam, follower or linkage issue rather than a dead cylinder; on-site diagnosis settles it in minutes.

Is a repair guaranteed? Yes, parts and labour — and if the lock is simply at end of life, the repair is deducted from the replacement.
