Smart locks: what they are really worth in 2026

Between maker enthusiasm and locksmith suspicion: the settled verdict after years of installing, repairing — and replacing them.

Smart locks have left the gadget shelf: phone opening, temporary codes for cleaners and Airbnb guests, entry logs, home-automation scenes. Three families: the adapter motorising your existing cylinder from inside (reversible, the mechanical key still works — capital point), the integrated smart lock replacing the whole mechanism (mind French multipoint compatibility), and the electronic cylinder where the key becomes a badge — rising fast in buildings and offices.

What they genuinely do better

Access management, unrivalled: the dog-walker's Tuesday 2–3 pm access, the weekend rental code, revocation in two seconds. No more key ring; entry history; remote locking and the end of "did I lock?". For short-term rentals the smart lock is now a professional quasi-standard.

What they do NOT do better — and must be said

A smart lock does not improve your door's physical resistance. The crowbar ignores Bluetooth; resistance remains the business of the mechanical cylinder, the multipoint and the door. Hence our doctrine: connected comfort ADDS to a serious mechanical base, never replaces it — and the adapter on a high-security card cylinder is the healthiest configuration on the market.

🔋 The awkward questions, short answers. Battery: 6–12 months real autonomy, long-warned, with emergency supply or mechanical key on serious models. Electronic failure: that is why we only fit models keeping a mechanical fallback. Hacking: certified big-brand models sit far above a house burglar's skill set — the real digital risk is the no-name €40 product whose protocol is as old as its discounts.

Insurance and rentals in France

French protection clauses speak of A2P — a mechanical certification. A smart lock replacing a certified lock can create contractual blur; an adapter on the existing certified lock changes nothing to compliance. Tenants may add a reversible adapter; full replacement needs the landlord's agreement and end-of-lease restoration. On landing doors, a visible outside keypad may concern the co-ownership.

Our 2026 grid

Recommended: for access management (big households, home workers, short-term rentals, offices), as an adapter on a serious base, with mechanical fallback and an established brand. Defensible: pure comfort for battery-disciplined technophiles. Avoid: no-name products, models without mechanical fallback, replacing an insurance-required certified lock, and the idea that a "smart" lock excuses a weak door. Budget: €150–400 for a brand adapter fitted, €400–900 for a quality integrated unit — plus the mechanical base if it needs upgrading, because the base is what protects. Phone stolen with the app? Revoke from another device in minutes — one scenario where connected actually beats the key ring. Internet down? Local unlocking (Bluetooth, code, badge) keeps working.
