Motorising a metal shutter: the guide for shopkeepers

A simple test: watch yourself opening the shop on a winter morning. If it starts with two minutes bent under a grinding crank, motorisation is not a luxury — it pays back in years of curtain life, in a shopkeeper's spared back, and in security.

The four real benefits

Your body: a curtain weighs 80–300 kg and is manoeuvred hundreds of times a year. The shutter: a motor moves at constant speed without the drops and jerks that wear slats and stops. Security: a painful shutter ends up left open "just for lunch" — the motor removes the friction that makes people skip closing, and motor braking resists forced lifting. Time: from two minutes to twenty seconds, twice a day.

Is yours motorisable? Three checks

Most healthy manual shutters motorise without changing the curtain: a tubular motor slides into the existing axle. The professional survey checks the mechanics (motorising a sick shutter motorises its breakdowns), the axle (diameter and condition), and the power supply (a dedicated line to the box). When direct motorisation is unreasonable, an honest quote for a new motorised shutter beats stubbornness.

Choosing the motor

Power is calculated from the curtain's weight — undersized burns out, oversized brutalises the mechanics. Single-phase 230 V covers most shops. Commands: facade key switch (robust), interior button, radio remote (the comfort choice), centralised control for multi-shutter fronts. And the item everyone forgets at the quote: the manual override — on power-cut day, how do you open? Demand it, test it at handover, and keep the crank anywhere except behind the closed shutter (we open shops every winter whose emergency crank sleeps inside).

Safety devices

The anti-fall device is mandatory: it blocks the curtain instantly if a transmission organ fails. Add obstacle detection where the shutter closes a passage, and electromechanical locking that replaces the manual locks people forget. Premises open to the public require documented periodic checks — one more reason for the maintenance contract.

The works and the budget

Half a day of works on a healthy shutter, shop open. The payback counts in curtain years: motorised and maintained, fifteen to twenty; hand-brutalised, eight to ten. Add the avoided night emergency (a snapped spring costs €250–600 at night rates) and the case is closed. One insurance note: check whether your commercial policy requires the shutter "locked" outside trading — motor locking or manual locks answer it, and documented maintenance of the safety devices is what the assessor will ask for.
