Becoming a locksmith: training, salaries and career paths

The locksmith's paradox: one of the most sought-after trades in France — companies struggle to hire, ours included — and one of the least known to school-leavers. The modern trade is really three: the emergency locksmith (fine openings, replacements, post-break-in securing — diagnosis and client relations as much as technique), the metalworker-locksmith (doors, grilles, metal shutters — the workshop side), and the installer (armoured blocks, multipoints, safes, access control). The best careers mix all three.

The routes in

The classic French path: the CAP serrurier-métallier (two years, ideally as an apprenticeship), extended by a Bac pro or brevets. Fine locksmithing — opening, cylinders, safes — is learned mostly in-company, through manufacturers' certification courses and specialised short modules. And career change is massive in this trade: ex-military, maintenance technicians, other crafts — adult CAP programmes in one year, accreditation of prior learning, and employers who read motivation and precision before CVs. Night and weekend on-call duty is well paid and a life choice; specialisation (safe opening, high-end armouring) commands premiums; independence multiplies income and responsibility alike.

What makes the difference

Precision — fine opening is a trade of tenths of millimetres and patience. Composure — half the emergency job is reassuring stressed people. And probity above all: the locksmith enters people's intimacy and touches their security; in a sector damaged by abusive practices, irreproachable professionals literally never lack work. Honesty is a measurable competitive advantage here.

The trade's future

Access control, smart locks and security home-automation are redrawing part of the job — but the French installed base remains massively mechanical, doors will keep slamming, and the hand skill of opening without destroying stays the untouchable core. Profiles mixing mechanical and digital cultures will be the decade's most wanted. Toward independence: five to ten years of employment to forge technique and network, then €15,000–40,000 of initial investment (vehicle, tooling, stock, insurance) and the long build of local reputation — and learn management too: failed craftsmen are almost never bad technicians, they are good technicians and poor managers.
